Founded in 1942 by a group of passionate teachers, the Glasgow Schools Rowing Club (GSRC) was originally established to promote physical fitness and discipline among boys in secondary schools across Glasgow. Today, operating as a registered Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) called Glasgow Scullers Rowing Club, the organisation has expanded to welcome youth and adult rowers of all experience levels.
A quick look at the club's timeline highlights several major milestones:
1942: GSRC is founded during World War II, initially rowing out of the Clydesdale Amateur Rowing Club and supported by an Education Committee grant.
1950s & 1960s: The club booms in popularity, with annual schools regattas at Glasgow Green attracting crowds and over 100 competing crews. By the early 1960s, up to 18 schools were involved.
1970s & 1980s: Membership numbers from local schools began to shrink due to reductions in funding. However, in the late 1970s, the club achieved a historic milestone by opening its doors to female rowers.
2000s Revival: In 2006, a partnership project introduced indoor rowing machines to every secondary school in Glasgow, which sparked a massive revival for GSRC.
2010s & Beyond: The club reinstated the Glasgow Schools Rowing Championships in 2013 and joined national talent development initiatives like 'Project Rio'. Former junior alumni like Josh Armstrong and Gavin Horsburgh helped the club reach international heights, going on to win Junior World Championship gold.
